CENTILIO WRITE / WORK

What is online word processor software, and how will Write work?

Short answers to what people ask about writing in a browser, and practical guides that are useful whatever you write with today. Questions about Write itself are answered as designed, because Write has not shipped.

Write has not shipped yet.

Everything on these pages — the screens, the features, the prices — is Centilio Write as designed, not a product you can open today. Write is in the third wave of Centilio tools: there is no app, no beta and no launch date yet, and we would rather show you the whole design and say so than publish a page with three sentences on it. Join the waitlist and you will hear first.

Topics

Start with the question you have.

In short: a word processor that runs in the browser rather than on one computer, so documents live online and several people can work in one at the same time. Write is designed as one, with your business records behind it.

Getting started

Importing Word files, choosing a template and inviting your team, designed to take minutes rather than a project.

Everyday writing

Live editing, comments, suggestions, versions and offline access to recent documents.

Celia

What it drafts, what it checks, and what it never does: send, sign or change a record.

Billing

Per business, not per seat, with a Free plan for up to three people. All prices are proposed.

Guides

Six guides, useful whatever you write with today.

Practical, short, and not about Write until the last step. They work in any word processor.

How to write a proposal from a deal

A proposal is a summary of a conversation the customer has already had with you. Write it from the deal, not from last year’s file.

  1. Start from what was agreed. Customer, contact, scope, price and dates come from the deal record or your notes from the call, not from memory.
  2. Lead with their problem. One short paragraph in the customer’s words on what they asked for; they should recognise their own brief.
  3. Price it in one place. One table with lines, quantities and totals, and no figures repeated in the text where they can drift.
  4. Say what happens next. Who signs, by when, and what starts the day after.
  5. Send it to be signed, not to be read. A proposal with a signature step gets an answer; an attachment gets a reply next week.

How to write a company policy people read

A policy is read when something has gone wrong. Write it for that day.

  1. Say who it is for and when it applies, in the first two lines.
  2. Write the rule, then the reason. One sentence each; the reason is what stops arguments.
  3. Check it against your records. Leave days, notice periods and roles must match what your people records actually say.
  4. Name an owner and a review date, so the policy does not quietly go out of date.
  5. Keep every version. When someone asks what the policy said in March, the answer should take seconds.

How to review a document as a team

Reviews go wrong when five people edit five copies. One document, clear roles.

  1. Share one document, not attachments, so everyone comments in the same place.
  2. Suggest, do not overwrite. Suggested changes show who proposed what; the author decides.
  3. Give each reviewer one question. Legal checks the terms, finance checks the numbers, the owner checks the tone.
  4. Resolve threads as you go, so the last reader sees only what is still open.
  5. Name the approved version before it leaves.

How to move from Word files to the browser

You do not have to move everything at once, and you should not.

  1. Start with templates. Rebuild the five documents you write most often; that is where the hours are.
  2. Bring documents when you touch them. Open old .docx files as you need them rather than migrating an archive.
  3. Keep exporting where people need files. Customers and lawyers who want .docx or PDF can still have them.
  4. Agree one place for drafts, so nobody keeps a private copy on a laptop.

How to write a monthly report that holds up

A report is trusted until one figure is wrong. Make every figure come from somewhere.

  1. Start with the three numbers the reader asked for, before anything else.
  2. Quote numbers from their source, not from memory or a pasted screenshot.
  3. Say what changed and why, in a sentence per number.
  4. Date it. A figure without an as-of date is an argument waiting to happen.
  5. Keep last month’s report, so this month’s can be compared with it.

How to keep one version of a document

A folder full of "final_v3_really-final.docx" is a process problem, not a naming problem.

  1. Keep one live document and share a link, not copies.
  2. Name versions at the moments that matter: sent, signed, approved.
  3. File the signed copy beside the draft, so nobody signs the wrong one.
  4. Export a file only when it leaves the business.
Questions

Quick answers.

When did word processors go online?

Browser-based word processors appeared in the mid-2000s, once browsers could edit text in place, and by around 2010 the large office suites had web versions of their own. Before that, a document was a file on one computer that you emailed back and forth.

Is there a word processor and a spreadsheet online, together?

Yes, most office suites pair the two. In Centilio the spreadsheet is Grid, planned for the same wave as Write, and a report in Write is designed to quote a live table from Grid rather than a pasted copy.

What word processor do most online writers use?

Mostly whichever their clients or employer use, because the file they hand over has to open at the other end. That usually means a document saved as .docx or PDF, which is why Write is designed to import and export both.

Can I import Word documents?

Yes, that is the design. Open a .docx with its headings, tables and comments, and export back to Word or PDF whenever someone needs a file.

Does Write work offline?

It is designed to. Recent documents stay available without a connection, and your changes sync when you reconnect.

When is Write available?

Write is in the third wave of Centilio tools. There is no date yet; join the waitlist and you will hear before the announcement.

Is Write free?

Free is proposed for up to three people, then Pro at $19 a month for the whole business. Nothing is charged until Write ships.
